Sleeping On The Job

I don't know about you, but I could use a nap right now. Why do I have a sneaking suspicion you could, too?

I can say this with authority because I'm an expert napper. I'm seriously great at it and I consider it one of the very best of my "dubious talents" (some others include being able to choose the Miss America pageant winner for the past 21 years, being able to recognize celebrities from 50 feet away and behind—it's true, if you don't believe me, ask my wife; not to mention being able to recognize brands of chocolate by taste, the way some people can recognize wines).

I'm firm believer in the power of napping, as well as the "power nap". Science has shown it's good for the body and soul, and it's a shame (not to mention unhealthful) that our fast-paced society has managed to remove napping from the daily schedule. Coffee breaks yes, napping no? Artificial stimulant vs. real rejuvenation?  There's something wrong there.

I mean, whatever happened to the Siesta, that nice long lunch/nap thing from 11 to 1 or 2? Personally, I think we all could use one. Every other animal naps and what are people if not uppity animals?

You know what I mean. Around two or three you find yourself sitting and staring, your mind working like lead. You can't think. Your head gets so heavy you want to put it on your desk.

But after a nap you're alert again! Your mind snaps into action and you can get a lot done. So what if you were asleep for a half an hour (or in my case, an hour-and-a-half). Even with the time spent snoozing, you still end up getting more done than you would have if you'd just sat there trying to get something done!

When I first started to write this, I didn't realize how much scientific information there was to back up the fact that napping boosts productivity. But then I found a lot of serious stuff on the web about napping, and how important it can be to health, sanity, and even productivity.

So I propose a new part of the workday: NAPTIME.

To make this acceptable to your boss (or wife, or even yourself), I've created an official-looking page full of explanations about why napping is good for business. Leave it on-screen while you're dozing off. (You can even download it as a NetObjects Fusion template and use the style yourself!)

Whether it's 40 winks or 40 minutes, a few minutes of shut-eye and you'll feel like new again.

You read the intro. You saw the Napping News (or did you?). Now you can use this template to make your own words look more newsworthy (no, not spongeworthy, that's something else entirely). The standard newsletter template features "sticky-note" type navigation that rotates and changes color (a double whammy). One of the many interesting things about the web is that people you have never met will tell  you things you'd never expect them to reveal. Maybe it's precisely because you're not face-to-face that they feel more free to say things. Or maybe it's because people want to be heard, so they'll tell you about themselves. Your site visitors are more than a random selection of individuals. Well, maybe they're not now, but they can be. After all, they're all coming to your Web site, and as long as they have that much in common, why not get them talking about it? Online community is more than just teenagers in chat rooms - on a business site, it can add up to unsolicited marketing.

The major search engines, such as Alta Vista, Lycos and others, give you a chance to control how your Web site is indexed through the use of META tags.  Make sure your Web designer uses TITLE and META tags to specify your site title, additional keywords to index and a short abstract. TITLE and META tags are placed at the beginning of your Web page document. Many organizations are also including 800 numbers in the TITLE, text that appears in the browser banner at the very top of a Web page.  Make sure your meta description is kept to 25 words or less to prevent the search engine from cutting your description short. Example:

    <TITLE>Welcome to Your Company -


<META Name="description" Content="Put your 25 word company or product description here">

<META Name="keywords" Content="Put your search keywords here">

To add a descriptive title in NetObjects Fusion go to the page, choose Edit/Custom Names and type the title in the title box (easy, huh?)

To add meta tags in NetObjects Fusion, right click on a page (not on a graphic or a text box) and choose "Layout HTML" Type the meta tag into the "Between Head Tags" box, like this:

<META Name="keywords" Content="Put your search keywords here">

Once these tags are placed in the document and you submit your site to Alta Vista and the other search engines, robots or spiders will be dispatched to search your site and record your title and meta tag descriptions.

If you want to horizontally center a page you created in NetObjects Fusion, all you have to do is

    1) Click on the gray area outside your page and then go to the properties palette and click on the HTML button. 

    2) Select the Beginning of Body tab and put in a center tag - <center> This will in center everything after that tag on your page. This will only work if you use the Regular Tables or Nested Tables option (Nested Tables preferably). The Layers and Styles Sheets options will not allow this to work the same way. (Thanks to David Walsh for this tip!)



Several sites let you register a domain name (the one I find easiest and least expensive is www.register.com ). But this site is interesting because as well as looking up a domain and letting you know if it's available or taken, it also checks to see if it's a trademark (and links you to related trademark information if it is), looks up the name in a dictionary, and shows related words that could spark an idea for a new name. It's an extremely useful tool for when you're trying to find a domain name that's actually available and useable!


This site creates text-as-graphics with a lot of flashy effects. My favorite is the animated flaming text. No, it's not necessary (remember that old IBM commercial with the flaming logo?) And obviously it's too hot to be cool. But it is fun, and if you use these effects responsibly you'll be fine!


Here's a great idea. All you have to do is visit this site and click on the "Donate Free Food" button. When you do, a sponsoring corporation will make a donation to feed a starving person for one day. You can do this once a day, and it costs nothing to you personally.

This is a form of public relations for the sponsoring company. It gets their name in front of you and associates it with a good cause. It does not cost you anything to make this donation. So bookmark it, email all your friends about it, and visit it once a day!
